XCOM director Jake Solomon has confirmed the turn-based tactical series will definitely make a return.
Speaking to VGC, Solomon said that XCOM will continue as long as he and the studio are around to make it. "As long as I live, as long as [developer] Firaxis lives, XCOM is... I won't even say sleeping," he said. "I will say XCOM is definitely not dead."
The latest game in the series, XCOM: Chimera Squad, was released in 2020, but the studio has since switched to working on Marvel's Midnight Suns. This new game was announced in August last year and follows a similar formula to the XCOM games, though obviously set in the Marvel universe and featuring the likes of Iron Man, Wolverine, and Spider-Man.
XCOM games have otherwise been released fairly regular since the series was relaunched in 2012 with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but Solomon's confirmation is a good confirmation that this will continue even as the studio explores these other projects.
In our 7/10 review of the previous game, IGN said: "XCOM: Chimera Squad plays with some interesting new ideas, but doesn't bring them together into a particularly graceful whole."
