A24 has dropped a new trailer for Pearl, the secret prequel to X--arguably already one of this year's best horror movies. The slasher film is scheduled to be released on September 16.
Directed by Ti West and co-written by star Mia Goth, the film will follow a younger version of her character than we got to know in X. X told the story of an amateur filmmaking team making a porno movie in rural Texas until the elderly couple who live on the land murderously intervene. Based on the trailer you can see below, Pearl is set sometime during World War I and will tell the story of how the cabin featured in X was used as a boarding house during the war, and how it became maybe a place you wouldn't want to rent as an Airbnb.
«It is very much a story about Pearl. So you will learn more about her,» West told Bloody Disgusting. «It is stylistically very different from X. You do not need one without the other, but they enrich each other in a specific way. In the way that X is affected, let's say by 1970s horror independent filmmaking and Americana cinema, Pearl is influenced by a very different era of filmmaking.»
In addition to Goth, Pearl's cast includes David Corenswet (House of Cards), Tandi Wright (Nothing Trivial), Matthew Sunderland (The Luminaries), and Emma Jenkins-Purro (The Brokenwood Mysteries).
