Warning: Spoilers for Netflix's Worst Roommate Ever!
Where is Youssef Khater, the con artist from Netflix’s new docuseries Worst Roommate Ever? Audiences were introduced to Khater in episode 3, titled “Marathon Man,” which delves into the life and crimes of the charismatic hustler. Youssef Khater is a man who was a marathon runner convicted of multiple fraud charges and attempted murder in Chile in April 2011 but only had a minimal sentence. Netflix’s new series Worst Roommate Ever is a five-part show focusing on seemingly innocent neighbors who end up being criminals, scammers, and, at times, even killers. Netflix is known for its hard-hitting crime documentaries, and Worst Roommate Ever is just that.
Youssef Khater, at the time, was a 33-year-old man of Lebanese descent, yet posed as a Palestinian marathon-runner and hosted a 12-bedroom hostel in Chile. Carlos Medina and Carlos Krauss of Federacion Palestina sponsored Khater to run the marathon, giving him $8,000 to enter the race, which he ended up stealing. Aside from scamming, he also tried to kill and bury one of his hostel roommates Callie Quinn, to keep the security deposits he stole from his housemates. Quinn survived, but Khater escaped; as she and her lawyer tried to arrest him, they learned that he also stole over $50,000 from British runner Dominic Rayner and was also arrested back in 2009 in Denmark for arson, embezzlement, and fraud, but never appeared for trial. Khater was finally caught in July 2011, according to the Netflix crime documentary, but was only in prison for a few years.
