Those looking for a Wordle alternative that isn’t just a copy and paste job can check out Knotwords, but only the mobile version is free.
There are endless Wordle clones out there. While some of them have put their own spin on the formula, the majority are the exact same game but limited to a specific subject.
Enter Knotwords, which is similar in that it involves guessing words, but also combines elements of crosswords and anagrams.
Created by Zach Gage and Jack Schlesinger, you are tasked with filling an irregularly shaped grid with the correct words. Unlike crosswords, however, you aren’t given a description of what the words are.
Instead, each segment of the grid tells you which letters are included in that segment, much like an anagram. However, the clues aren’t enough to figure out a single word; you need to compare them with other segments, so every horizontal and vertical line includes a word.
Since the segments cross over with each other and don’t always form straight lines, it can be rather challenging. Unlike Wordle, however, you have unlimited guesses and there is a hint system too.
It comes with a collection of puzzles, plus daily ones that are archived so they can be played even if you miss them; a feature many wish Wordle would add.
Although it looks like you’ll only have access to that month’s puzzles, so April’s will no longer be archived once we enter May.
It’s also not free either, at least on PC. The Steam version is £9.29, but you can get it at a discount of £8.36 until May 5.
