Warning: spoilers for Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #2
The Amazons as DC Comics fans know them did not begin as a singular group according to DC Comcs' current Back Label Wonder Woman series. Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #2 has revealed Hippolyta's new leadership role. She isn't the queen of all the Amazons; she created her own faction.
DC Comics fans know that the Amazons are a group of warrior women. Frequently, they recruit women who die unfair deaths in Man's World and give them a shot at having a new life. The Amazons origins as a group have been altered and adjusted before, but now, the group has a radical new beginning. The original Amazons did not engage in recruitment. They were created by the goddesses of Olympus and simply freed women from slavery and mistreatment.

Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #2 has the creative team of Kelly Sue DeConnick, Gene Ha, Wesley Wong, and Clayton Cowles. Within it, Hippolyta has a meeting with Artemis where she receives the goddess' blessing before catching up with the Amazons who saved her, seeking to join them. She is present when they save a group of women who are to be enslaved and she demands that they all be allowed to join the Amazons — which is not how things are done.
The Amazons discuss splitting them amongst the various factions, but ultimately a decision is made to keep the newly freed women together by creating a new faction. They serve all goddesses, instead of one, and the agreed upon leader is Hippolyta.
