Warning: Contains spoilers for Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #2
Marvel Comics is bringing back one of the most appreciated Avengers lineups in the last way anyone could expect. The characters that formed the core of the New Avengers relaunch back in 2005 are coming back as alternate versions of Gwen Stacy that Spider-Gwen encounters during her adventure throughout the Multiverse.
In 2004, Marvel Comics gave the reins of its flagship superhero team to one of the hottest writers on the market, Brian Michael Bendis, fresh off the success of his runs on Ultimate Spider-Man and Daredevil. The Bendis era began with the destruction of the Avengers at the hands of the Scarlet Witch during the Avengers: Disassembled storyline, which led to a relaunch of all the Avengers-related titles, spearheaded by New Avengers. Bendis and artist David Finch applied a new concept to the team. Instead of making the Avengers the home for heroes who did not have their own ongoing series (as it had been a custom for some time), Bendis put on his team all the most popular and best-selling characters of that period, including Spider-Man, who became an «active» full-time Avenger for the first time, Wolverine, who had always been exclusive to mutants teams, and later even Doctor Strange. This team coalesced around the leadership of Captain America and went through many era-defining Marvel Comics events, such as House of M, Civil War, World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, and Dark Reign.
