DC's Aquaman is the company's most famous aquatic superhero, and perhaps the most famous underwater hero in the entire superheroic community. But another member of the Justice League has recently stolen his thunder; Wonder Woman now has the ability to breathe underwater as of Wonder Woman: Evolution #5, and Arthur Curry's reign under the seas might be coming to an end. But the comic also hints that not everything about Diana's newfound ability it as it seems.
Aquaman is one of DC Comics' oldest superheroes and as such, his origin is frequently subject to various changes and retcons across the character's 80-year history. Initially, he was a full-blooded human who became able to breathe underwater after being experimented on by his father, but his story was later updated to include his Atlantean origin and ancestry. Now presented as a half-human, he defended Earth's oceans against various supervillains — but he's not alone.

In the new Wonder Woman: Evolution series, Diana is spirited away to an otherworldly realm where she's faced with various challenges from her past and present. She's already fought a gun-wielding Steve Trevor in the ruins of Themyscira, but now her own mother has captured her and has sentenced her to death via «Poseidon's last abomination.» The abomination in question is a massive sea monster that Wonder Woman must face — underwater. Diana spends an inordinate amount of time beneath the waves, but to her shock, she doesn't run out of breath.«I...can breathe underwater...» she muses, clearly shocked.
