In a surprise move on Tuesday, Warner Bros. Games announced that it was closing three studios, including Monolith Productions, while also cancelling the long-awaited Wonder Woman game from the studio.
Alongside Monolith Productions, WB Games also announced it would be closing Player First Games (the developer behind the fighting game MultiVersus) and WB Games San Diego, which was working on an unknown AAA game at the time of its closure.
The Wonder Woman game was being developed by Monolith Productions, who developed hit games like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and MIddle-earth: Shadow of War, as well as the first two entries in the F.E.A.R. series horror FPS games. While little was known about the title, it was reported to be using similar technology as Middle-earth’s “Nemesis” system in the game.
While Warner Bros. Games did not publicly acknowledge the closures, an email to employees obtained by Polygon from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games JB Perrette confirmed the news, citing a “disappointing 2024” and re-focus on WB’s core IPs (Harry Potter, DC, Game of Thrones) as main motivators.
“We need to and will do better for our fans first and foremost, and also because regaining that credibility is critical to us securing even more investment in Games in the years to come,” Perrette wrote. “Getting our swagger back happens one high quality game release at a time, and our financial credibility gets rebuilt one fiscal quarter at a time — delivering what we said we would deliver, and no big negative surprises.”
When it came to the Wonder Woman game, which is a DC property, Perrette said the game didn’t fall “within our strategic priorities,” and was looking to “repurpose our talent where possible” in regards to potentially reassigning employees.
Perrette’s letter also said that the focus for WB Games will be on “fewer but bigger franchises,” and also mentioned focusing on Batman titles for DC while the new DCU is built out by
