Each companion in has four unique skills you can upgrade throughout the game. Companions don’t level up each time you do; instead, they get a single ability point every few levels. I beat at level 28, just two shy of the level 30 cap, and I had eight upgrade points for each companion. Since each companion ability has four possible levels, you won’t be able to fully upgrade all their abilities.
Deciding how to build a companion in is completely tied to these four abilities. This is because doesn’t let you change companion gear. This is a bit of a double-edged sword; while it makes companions easier to manage, it also means your ability choices are more important. Luckily, you can respec at any time if you don’t like your build for a small amount of gold.
I did my first Avowed playthrough with a Ranger build, so Kai was a constant companion for me.I leaned towards making him more tanky, so he could soak up damage while I kept my distance. Second Wind was a huge help with this, as it made sure Kai stayed in the fight longer. The Refreshing Wind upgrade was especially helpful because when he came back, he could also immediately activate some of his other abilities.
