Although season 4 was one of the show’s strongest outings so far, The Connersseason 5 still might be the final season of the series, and this wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. The Conners season 4 did an impressive job of addressing the sitcom spinoff’s biggest issues. Unlike earlier seasons of the series, The Conners season 4’s Roseanne references proved the show was unafraid of acknowledging the complicated legacy of the show’s former heroine.
Meanwhile, Ben and Darlene’s 3-season love story finally paid off with a romantic wedding in the season 4 finale, while the news that Becky and Darlene would both be moving out of the Conners family home meant the status quo of the sitcom is finally being altered for good. Despite these creative improvements, however, The Conners may soon have run its course. With Darlene’s son Mark heading to college soon and her daughter Harris yearning for more independence from the titular family, keeping the Conners clan together won’t remain believable for much longer.

While rumors that Laurie Metcalf’s Jackie could exit The Conners in season 5 may not turn out to be true, the sitcom is still reaching what feels like a natural conclusion for the show. Dan’s second wife Louise stated numerous times throughout The Conners season 4 that the newlywed couple needed some time and space to themselves, something that is hard to come by when three generations of the Conners live under one roof. Now that Becky and Darlene are definitely moving out (and Mark hopes to attend college, meaning he’ll soon leave too), The Conners season 5 could be a perfect send-off for the series.
