Will Ferrell makes an appearance at an NBA game as his Semi-Pro character, Jackie Moon. Released in 2008, Semi-Pro follows Moon, the owner/ player/ coach of the Flint City Tropics, who rallies his teammates in the hopes of getting his team into the NBA. Semi-Pro released at the height of Ferrell's popularity, coming after the likes of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Blades of Glory, but before 2008 hit Step Brothers.
Semi-Pro marks the first (and only) directorial effort of Kent Alterman and earned mostly negative reviews from both audiences and critics. The film sits at a dismal 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, sporting only a slightly better audience score of 38%. Semi-Pro was also a flop at the box office, earning just over $43 million on an estimated $55 million budget. In addition to Ferrell, Semi-Pro also stars Woody Harrelson, André 3000, Will Arnett, Andy Richter, Maura Tierney, David Koechner, and Rob Corddry. Semi-Pro marks the second collaboration between Koechner and Ferrell after 2004's Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Despite the film's poor reception, Jackie Moon is a character Ferrell enjoys revisiting.
