One of April's PS Plus Essential offerings, Tails of Iron is a tough-as-nails 2D RPG that you might have missed. Fret not, we're here to tell you why you should check it out outside of the fact that, you know, you'll have access to it with an active PS Plus membership from 4th April.
Tails of Iron tells the tale of Redgi, a rat prince seeking to reclaim his lost kingdom from the imperial ambitions of reptilian toads. The animated trailer below perfectly sets the scene and is narrated by the excellent Doug Cockle, perhaps best known for his role as Geralt in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Gameplay is a weighty affair, requiring nerves of steel as you will need to commit to each action in the style of 2D Soulslikes such as Salt & Sanctuary and Hollow Knight. Redgi is able to equip different armour sets and weapon types in order to even the odds, taking a strategic, methodical approach to combat.
Don't let the woodland aesthetic fool you, Tails of Iron has a reputation as a challenging game with plenty of tough bosses to overcome. If and when you are victorious in your quest (which will take between 8-10 hours), you can then dive into meaty post-game expansion, Bloody Whiskers
Tails of Iron sits as a nice accompaniment to both the more relaxing 3D Sackboy: A Big Adventure and the genre-blending Meet Your Maker, with the former especially being something worth exploring.
