World of Warcrafthas always been rigid in its binary faction system of Horde versus Alliance, but it appears that is about to change with new cross-faction gameplay. The popular MMORPG has been around for over 16 years and throughout its entire lifetime, the player base has been split between red and blue, and only now are things beginning to lean toward a permanent truce. This rift between players based on which faction they play for has been a fundamental part of the Warcraft experience since its conception, as the lore of the game is built upon the struggle between two warring races.
Players are faced with the decision of which faction to pick the moment they create their first character, depending on the race they want to play as. The Alliance is for humans, dwarves, and night elves, while WoW's Horde races comprise orcs, trolls and tauren to name just a few of Azeroth's many peoples. Players have to remain in the faction they play for, totally isolated from the enemy side unless facing them in PvP combat or passing them by in neutral zones. Guilds are faction-locked and the only way to change factions is to make a new character or pay real money to change your race.

Players between factions have even been prevented from understanding one another since an in-game bot will scramble text to make it appear like the other faction is speaking a foreign language.
