Widely recognized as the first popular superhero, Superman essentially defined the superhero genre that has today become one of the biggest and most profitable in all of cinema. First appearing back in 1938, Superman's history is long and relatively complicated, although his general story and characterization have changed very little in the interim years.
Superman's cinematic history is equally long, beginning with his first live-action appearance in 1948 and extending to the present day. Although Superman's popularity has rarely waned, he's far from the most successful superhero in relation to his cinematic appearances. This is evidenced by the recent success of the MCU and the far less impressive response to its DC counterpart, the DCEU. However, it seems that Superman movies are doomed to fail.
