The MCU's Phase 5 slate didn't include any mention of Spider-Man — and with good reason. Marvel's SDCC 2022 presentation left viewers thrilled, with the studio confirming the entire Phase 5 slate and even some key titles in Phase 6. What's more, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed phases 4 through 6 will collectively be known as "the Multiverse Saga," confirming the MCU's overarching direction.
In truth, it's long been clear that the multiverse would be key to the MCU's future. Avengers: Endgame introduced time travel into the MCU, and Loki built upon this by introducing the multiverse. Since then, Marvel has used the concept of the multiverse as an opportunity to explore alternate timelines and universes in Marvel's What If...?, while two major blockbuster films - Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — have centered around this concept. These movies clearly positioned both Doctor Strange and Spider-Man as key to the Multiverse Saga.

Surprisingly, though, the MCU's Phase 5 slate doesn't appear to include any Spider-Man films. His absence is quite remarkable given he's already been set up as a major multiversal player, with Sony allowed to weave their films into the broader MCU multiverse. Spider-Man will presumably return for Avengers: Secret Wars at the very least, at the tail end of Phase 6, so many viewers are wondering why his future wasn't announced alongside the Phase 5 and 6 slate.
