Warning! SPOILERS for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness displayed a few different versions of its titular character and raised the question of why so many versions of Doctor Strange become evil. While the first Doctor Strange movie was already dealing with the concept of the multiverse, it was only after the Loki series that the idea of multiple versions of the same character started to be explored by the MCU. Stories like What If…?, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange 2 have all featured alternate versions of MCU heroes, and, curiously, all of the Doctor Strange variants shown were either evil or had done some ethically questionable things.
The title for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness already revealed that the movie would dive deep into the MCU's multiverse and most likely feature more than one Stephen Strange. While Doctor Strange 2's Illuminati cameos or Scarlet Witch's powers evolution were all worthy of the audience's excitement, it was in the differences between the different versions of Doctor Strange that the movie really told a Doctor Strange story. In the Sam Raimi film, there were three versions of Doctor Strange besides the MCU one, namely Defender Strange, Earth-838 Strange, and the Darkhold-corrupted Sinister Strange. Previously, What If…? had also introduced an alternate reality, Strange, the Strange Supreme, in the «What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?» episode.
