There are several main challenges on RuPaul's Drag Race, but the one that always causes at least one queen to stumble each season is the sewing challenge. Also known as the fashion challenge, each season of RPDR, including its spin-off RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, requires the contestants to create beautiful runway-ready outfits out of certain fabrics or unconventional materials. Although the daunting task of creating interesting looks from scratch has resulted in some beautiful designs over the years (such as Utica's sleeping bag creation during RPDR season 13), not everyone has found the same success.
In fact, it's more common for the queens to struggle with design challenges than it is for them to succeed, especially when it comes to sewing. Whether a queen doesn't know how to operate a sewing machine, or whether they can't sew at all, there are some looks throughout the series that fans celebrate for all the wrong reasons. Aja LaBeija's orange princess look from RPDR season 9 is the outfit she wore when she memorably read Valentina, for example. Kelly Mantle's soft design on RPDR season 6 was instantly compared to bacon, while future winner Monét X Change's sponge dress on RPDR season 10 was a miss in execution, but an «A» in originality. The most recent design challenge, which occurred on RPDR All Stars season 7, even featured a mini-breakdown by season 5 winner Jinkx Monsoon over her lack of sewing experience.
