Before Sandra Oh took on Eve Polastri, it was revealed that Maya Rudolph was originally offered the titular role in Killing Eve but she turned it down. Created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Killing Eve follows Oh’s Eve, an MI6 agent who investigates the international assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer). Villanelle and Eve share a passionate interest in one another, endangering their own lives and the lives of those around them. As they learn more about each other their relationship develops into one of romance-fuelled obsession.
After its debut in 2018, this hit series came to an unfortunate end earlier this year. Throughout its four-season run, Killing Eve was praised for its excellent writing and phenomenal performances, although the series finale did garner somewhat mixed reviews from fans. Oh achieved many career successes during her time as Eve Polastri, going on to win a Golden Globe for her performance in 2019, as well as gaining several Primetime Emmy nominations.

Despite the overall success that Killing Eve has enjoyed, Rudolph does not regret rejecting the role of Eve Polastri. During an interview with THR, Rudolph admits that she would have loved the opportunity to work with Waller-Bridge after seeing her previous work in the hit series Fleabag. Regardless of her desire to work with the writer, there was one thing stopping her: travel. “… there was no way I was about to move to Europe for months. Like, how?” says Rudolph.
