In the last few months, Instagram has released a lot of policy changes and features that intend to make the platform a safer place for users. Especially after the incident when an employee-turned-whistleblower leaked several internal documents, releasing several serious allegations against the company. It was during this time that Instagram's parent company, Facebook decided to rebrand to Meta, an organization where virtual reality is its priority.
Since then, users have seen features that allow them to set timers for breaks and limit their overall application usage. Lately, Instagram has been asking users to enter their birthday if users deny for a couple of times, and their accounts are being removed. Why is this happening? Since Instagram has a vast audience of different age groups, it is natural for the application to have varied content as well. However, this raises a concern of young Instagram users coming across inappropriate content that might have a negative impact on their life.
Back in August 2021, Instagram VP of Youth Products, Pavni Diwanji, announced that the platform would make it mandatory for all users to turn in their birthday-related information, including the date, month and year of birth. The platform will primarily use this information to provide a safer environment for young users. Since then, Instagram has sent constant reminders to users who haven't entered their birthday information. However, if someone denies and fails to provide the information, the app will ban their account. Before this, Instagram asked new users to enter their date of birth before they could use the application.
