Amazon Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will explore the history of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, including the forging of the Rings of Power. Audiences were previously introduced to the history of these powerful rings in Peter Jack's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now, the live-action TV show will go back in time and explore parts of Middle-earth's epic history that the original movies barely had time to explain, such as the origin of the Rings of Power.
Thanks to Prime Video confirming The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's title, it has become clear that these artifacts will be incredibly important to the story told. This is hardly a surprise considering their role in Tolkien's fantasy world, but the emphasis is certainly being put on them from the beginning. Those familiar with the previous movies and Tolkien's books are well aware of their history, where Sauron helped the Elves craft the 20 Rings of Power, including the One Ring that the Dark Lord kept for himself.

Sauron and the Elves created the Rings of Power during the Second Age, a time period that spans thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings. The Second Age is where the entirety of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set and officially lasted 3,441 years in the books. The Rings of Power were forged starting in the year 1500 Second Age, although Sauron didn't forge the One Ring in the fires of Mt. Doom until 1600 SA.
