The extended edition of Spider-Man: No Way Home will release in the third quarter of 2022, and while new footage and extended scenes are expected, the film will need to meaningfully expand on its characters and narrative to be worth watching. No Way Home is the biggest crowd-pleaser of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 thus far, uniting three generations of Spider-Man film franchises via their supervillains and respective iterations of Spider-Man himself. As with all MCU films, No Way Home also cleverly set up future storylines for its characters, and while it might be the final appearance of fan-favorite supervillains, the future looks bright for Tom Hollands’s Spider-Man and perhaps even his predecessors. Spider-Man: No Way Home’s extended cut has an opportunity to make all of these elements work even better.
By bringing back the continuities and characters of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man duology in meaningful ways, Spider-Man: No Way Home is one of the best examples of fanservice in filmmaking. In addition to bringing back the definitive cinematic iterations of the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus (played by Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina, respectively), No Way Home lets viewers know that, despite some rough patches, Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson are still together, providing some additional closure to an iconic superhero film series that ended on its own terms. No Way Home also updates viewers on the state of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, whose story is tragically left unfinished after The Amazing Spider-Man 2, while providing moments for him and two of his supervillains that prove how underappreciated his duology is.
