Star Ed Harris addresses both host and human versions of the Man in Black in Westworld season 4 and teases the future for the two Williams. Westworld season 1 begins in the titular Wild West-themed amusement park populated by animatronic androids known as hosts. As the hosts achieve consciousness and escape the park, the cerebral sci-fi series has strayed further and further from its initial premise, with season 3 expanding the setting to a dystopian world dominated by a powerful AI named Rehoboam. Westworld season 4, which premiered June 26 on HBO, picks up seven years after the events of the previous season.
Since the beginning of the series, Harris has played the sadistic Westworld veteran known as the Man in Black who has been visiting the park for over thirty years as a regular guest and also owns a majority share in the business. During his early days in the park, William (played by Jimmi Simpson) is a compassionate man with a strong moral compass before he ultimately corrupted by Westworld and heads down a darker and darker path. At the end of season 3, he is seemingly killed by the host copy of Charlotte Hale but in season 4, it is revealed the real William is being kept alive in a cryo chamber while Halores controls a host copy of William to do her bidding.
