Readers discuss their favourite Dark Souls style games and the pleasures of overcoming the challenges of Bloodborne and Sekiro.
The subject for this week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Cable, who was obviously inspired by the release of Elden Ring and the huge influence developer FromSofware has had on modern gaming.
Everyone had a favourite, even Dark Souls 2, but it was fascinating to see how many people felt they’d never be able to beat the games at first and how pleased they were to prove themselves wrong in the end.
Family adventure I think my best memories of the Soulsborne titles is playing through Bloodborne with my dad and brother. I would summon them to my game or vice versa and we would work through each level, wailing and screaming as we went.
My dad is no longer the gamer he used to be and in several fights he rolled off the edge of the play area, more often than not during boss fights. My dad has a habit of shouting ‘Oooh’ in an almost painful way when he is surprised. He will normally clutch his control sticks when he does so and can end up doing all sorts of hilarious moves at the most inopportune moment.
Amusingly, as soon as I hear that sound I know we’re in trouble. It took us several months of playing to get through the game, but it was memorable indeed.
I am eagerly awaiting Elden Ring to continue our shared adventures. I have a feeling we will be howling and squealing all over again.Matt
