GameCentral readers name their favourite indie games of the last two generations, including Into The Breach and Cuphead.
The subject for this week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Futterman and also asked how often you play indie games and what you see as the key differences between them and AAA titles.
A huge range of different games were mentioned but everyone agreed that indie titles are often much more imaginative and unique than their big budget rivals, as well as considerably less bloated.
Honk if you like indie gaming There’s so many indie games I’ve enjoyed over the years, from Hades to Into The Breach but for whatever reason the one that first that came to mind for this Hot Topic is Untitled Goose Game.
That game is just a joy from beginning to end and just thinking about it raises a smile to my face. It’s charming, clever, and very open-ended in how you solve the puzzles of a goose out to annoy people for no good reason. I imagine its budget wouldn’t cover a single cut scene of Horizon Forbidden West, but Untitled Goose Game does infinitely more with its modest resources.
I think the important thing with indie games is not just that they allow developers to be more experimental but by having to keep things simple with the budget you get more of the spirit of early gaming. Art through adversity and all that.Ishi
The future of gaming I think the last time this topic came up a few years ago I said Divinity: Original Sin 2 and nothing has knocked that off its perch as my favourite indie game, it’s just so good. I can’t wait for Baldur’s Gate 3.
