Kerry Washington recently recreated Legally Blonde's iconic pool scene in a video posted to social media. The 2001 comedy film, directed by Robert Luketic and starring Reese Witherspoon, saw the character of Elle Woods, a sorority girl intent on winning back her ex-boyfriend, overcoming stereotypes and succeeding at Harvard Law School. Washington is best known for her role as Olivia Pope on the ABC series Scandal, as well as playing Broomhilda von Shaft in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. She and Witherspoon also co-starred in the Hulu series Little Fires Everywhere, in which one episode featured a sly Legally Blonde reference, and the two are friends in real life.
Since its release over two decades ago, Legally Blonde has found continued success and established a strong fanbase. Witherspoon earned praise for her portrayal of Elle Woods and received a nomination for Best Actress — Motion Picture Musical or Comedy at the 2001 Golden Globe Awards. The film eventually spawned its own franchise, with a sequel coming out two years later. That was followed by the Broadway production of Legally Blonde: The Musical and a 2009 spin-off, Legally Blondes. MGM Studios confirmed that another sequel was in development back in 2018, and it was later announced that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor would write the script.
