The randomly-generated protagonists of Watch Dogs: Legion do more to help the game than many people realize. Although it was a risk for the game to feature an ensemble of recruitable NPCs rather than a defined main character, the game manages to make the dynamic work. Despite the initial controversy, Watch Dogs: Legion's random playable characters are very good for the game.
In Watch Dogs: Legion, the heroic hacker group DedSec has had their reputation destroyed in a version of London controlled by an alliance of a corrupt corporation, paramilitary group, and street gang. The player controls the new members of DedSec as they fill their ranks with more recruits and expose all of the secrets and lies that have been propping up the story's villains before bringing them down. With only a few exceptions, such as Assassin's Creed reference Darcy Clarkson, all of these characters are randomly generated. The player can use any of their collected operatives at any time and switch whenever necessary.

One of the strengths of Watch Dogs: Legion's ensemble cast is the way that it affects the game. The player could get through the game twice and have an entirely different team in each playthrough. Each character not only has their own job and schedule, but also different traits and occasionally character-specific equipment. The player's squad in Watch Dogs: Legion is incredibly customizable, and that makes it one of the game's biggest perks.
