Storage company Verbatim is launching an external SSD that doesn't allow data deletion or overwriting, turning it into a write-one drive for archiving purposes.
As Tom's Hardware reports, the Verbatim SWOVA128G, also known as the Long-life SSD, offers 128GB of portable storage, a USB 3.2 Gen1 interface for data transfer and power, and comes with a 10-year guarantee. Verbatim says the drive uses MLC NAND memory that has passed "strict selection standards" and can cope with temperatures of -35 to 55 degrees Celsius.
The write-protected state of the drive is controlled using software. If Verbatim's dedicated software isn't installed on the PC the drive is connected to, it's read-only. However, with the dedicated software installed, you can add new files as long as free storage remains, but no deletions or renaming is allowed.
One limitation of the drive is compatibility when wanting to add files. The dedicated software will only work on Windows 10 or Windows 11 with .NET 4.8 installed. Windows S Mode is not supported, either. However, files can be read from the Long-life SSD using any operating system that supports the exFAT file format.
Anyone investing in this drive for their long-term storage needs is placing a lot of trust in Verbatim to ensure the dedicated software remains up-to-date for many years to come. It's also important to point out the 10-year guarantee is for the drive, not the data stored on it.
Verbatim has yet to reveal pricing or availability for the Verbatim SWOVA128G. While we wait for this information to appear, consider that backup software and services offer a much more reliable option than a single drive for keeping your important data safe.
