A new trailer is out for Vengeance, a film written, directed by, and starring former The Office actor B.J. Novak. Novak was a series regular on The Office, playing the role of Ryan Howard. Not only did Novak appear on screen for the series, but he also wrote and directed several episodes.
Now Focus Features reveals the trailer for Novak's film directorial debut with Vengeance. Novak plays Ben Manalowitz, a radio host who travels to Texas for the funeral of Abilene, a woman he barely knew, and who recently died from an opioid overdose. Once there, he learns that Abilene's family believes that he was her serious boyfriend, and Abilene's brother, Ty (played by Boyd Holbrook), enlists Ben to help avenge Abilene's death as Ty believes she was murdered. Ben agrees to this pursuit, but only because he plans to tell a story about people inventing conspiracies to satisfy confirmation bias rather than facing a more uncomfortable truth. Aside from Novak, the film also stars Issa Rae, Ashton Kutcher, and J. Smith-Cameron. The film's premise touches on serious topics such as the opioid crisis, and people's likelihood to believe misinformation, but does so with a satirical tone, a technique Novak is familiar with as evidenced by his FX seriesThe Premise. For those looking for the next summer film that blurs the line between comedy and drama, they can see Vengeance in theaters on July 29, 2022.
