CBS is currently developing a TV show based on the character from Bram Stoker’s classic gothic novel Dracula.
This marks the second time that the monster hunter will be adapted into a series following Syfy’s horror fantasy series centering around Van Helsing’s descendant, portrayed by Kelly Overton. The show ran on-air for five seasons from 2016-2021. Besides the Syfy series, Van Helsing also received a movie adaptation in 2004, which starred Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale.
“The series is a contemporary take on the monster hunter Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, who uses his uniquely inquisitive mind working alongside his ex, relentless FBI special agent Mina Harker, to solve New York City’s most harrowing cases,” reads the logline (via Deadline).
The Van Helsing TV show hails from executive producer Rob Doherty, who’s no stranger to adapting timeless characters into the modern setting. He’s best known for creating the CBS procedural drama Elementary, which was a modern remake of Sherlock Holmes’ story starring Jonny Lee Miller as a titular detective, and Lucy Liu as a gender-swapped version of Dr. Watson. The upcoming new series will also be executive produced by Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman. It is a production by Lionsgate Television.
