A television adaptation of Urban Cowboy is in the works at Paramount+. Directed by James Bridges, from a story by Aaron Latham, Urban Cowboy premiered in June 1980. The western romance focused on the turbulent relationship between Bud Davis (John Travolta) and Sissy (Debra Winger). Highlighting the popularity of country music from that time period, the western largely unfolded at Gilley’s Club – a football-sized bar with country influences in Pasadena, Texas. Receiving generally favorable reviews at the time of its debut, Urban Cowboy also had a popular soundtrack that featured music from the likes of Kenny Rogers and Eagles.
Back in 2015, it was announced that a television remake of Urban Cowboy was in development. Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer was attached to write and direct the pilot, which told the story of two star-crossed young lovers as they chase their dreams while dancing in bars and griming through oil refineries. The project, which reimagined the 1980 film by focusing on the Latin music world, was being considered at Fox. Ultimately, in December of that year, the network announced that it was not moving forward with the remake.
