Fans have discovered the most important secret of them all in Elden Ring: it is possible to pause the game if you know how.
Elden Ring reignited the debate over video game difficulty but its resounding sales success has made it very clear that, actually, most people are very happy to play a game they know to be extremely difficult.
There is one aspect of the game though, and Soulsborne titles in general, that almost everyone agrees goes to far: the purposeful lack of a pause button.
Except it turns out that there is a way to the pause the game after all. So if the call of nature beckons you don’t have to go and find a bush (to hide in, hoping your character isn’t discovered in the interim).
How to pause Elden Ring on console and PCPausing the game is very easy but the problem is it seems to be an accident, that once developer FromSoftware find out about they’ll probably patch out with an update.
For now though, all you have to do is go to the inventory screen and press the Help button (as indicated at the bottom of the screen) and then choose Menu Explanation.
As long as its explanation of what the menus do is onscreen the game will be paused, no matter what you were doing at the time.
It’s probably still not going to help much in a boss battle, given the brief disorientation you’ll feel when unpausing will be ample time for most enemies to kill you, but at least the option is there.
If From do decide to patch it out then there are already fan-made mods on the PC that allow you to pause, in the manner of a normal game.
On consoles though this is your only option for now, so enjoy it while you can.
