Turning Red follows Meilin “Mei” Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian who is confident in herself and whose relationship with her mother is changing as she gets older, with disparate interests, friends she’d rather hang out with, and a need to explore things beyond her mother’s overprotective and watchful eyes.

Mei (or fondly known to by her mother as Mei Mei) is a dutiful daughter and an excitable adolescent who loves her friends and the boy band 4*Town. Mei is voiced by actress Rosalie Chiang, who was previously in two short films, Soiled and The Interns, as well as a guest-star in the TV series Clique Wars. Turning Red marks her first feature debut.
Ming is Mei’s overprotective and somewhat overbearing mother who runs the largest Chinese temple in Toronto. Ming is voiced by Sandra Oh, who is best known for playing Dr. Christina Yang on the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy and Eve Polastri in Killing Eve. Oh has also been in Netflix’s The Chair, Amazon’s animated series Invincible, Raya and the Last Dragon, and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
