HBO has given an update on the plannedTrue Blood reboot. Based on The South Vampire Mysteries book series by Charlaine Harris, True Blood takes place in a universe where vampires have recently revealed their presence to the world and focuses on telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) in the fictional town of Bon Temp, Louisiana. As Sookie falls for a mysterious vampire named Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), Sookie and her friends are exposed to a larger world filled with all sorts of supernatural creatures. The series premiered on HBO on September 7, 2008, and was a cultural phenomenon for HBO, running for seven seasons until it wrapped up on August 24, 2014.
In December 2020, six years after the series wrapped, it was announced that Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa was developing a True Blood reboot alongside original series creator Alan Ball. In February 2021, the series was still in the early stages of development and it appeared that there were no plans for any of the original cast members to return to the series, possibly indicating the show was a proper reboot and not a loose continuation or a spin-off project. However, it has been over a year since the last known word was given on the project, and many have wondered what the status of the series would be.
