Recent comments from an HBO executive suggest that development is taking place behind the scenes on True Detective season 4. First airing in 2014, True Detective is a crime drama anthology series following various law enforcement officers as they attempt to solve complex mysteries while struggling with their own personal demons. The series, which was created by Nic Pizzolatto, aired its third season in 2019, with no confirmation regarding whether or not it would get a fourth.
The critically-acclaimed first season stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two Louisiana homicide detectives who investigate a murder over the course of 17 years. The second season, which stars Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn, is largely considered to be a significant step down from the first, but True Detective season 3, which stars Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff, did see an improved critical reception, although it failed to garner the same awards recognition and viewership numbers. Pizzolatto wrote all three seasons of True Detective but, following the conclusion of the third, it was mutually agreed with HBO that his contract would not be renewed.
