Steven Spielberg's latest movie, West Side Story, gets an unexpected crossover from one of his most iconic films in a hilarious parody video. Though it may have seemed like Spielberg has tackled every genre under the sun, the prolific director's first musical arrived just last year. West Side Story, a remake of 1961's movie, which was in turn based on the 1957 Tony-winning musical, became Spielberg's latest critically-acclaimed movie upon its debut in December. It earned glowing reviews and an impressive 7 Oscar nominations; Ariana DeBose won the award for best supporting actress after receiving near-universal praise for her performance as spirited Anita.
West Side Story follows the same mold as Romeo and Juliet, in that two young lovers forge a connection despite being from warring groups. Maria (Rachel Zegler) is a recent immigrant from Puerto Rico who has come to New York to live with her brother Bernardo (David Alvarez), the leader of the Sharks. Tony (Ansel Elgort), meanwhile, is a former member of the Sharks' biggest rivals, the Jets; when he and Maria lock eyes at a school dance, though, the rest of the world falls away. Spielberg's West Side Story also stars Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, Brian D'Arcy James, and Rita Moreno, who played Anita in the original movie.
