Amazon has opened up about when it plans to announce more information about its upcoming and games.
In a recent interview with Variety, Christoph Hartmann — Vice President at Amazon Games and co-founder of video game publisher 2K — was asked when fans might get to see more about any of the games that Amazon has in the works. Hartmann said that it wouldn’t be right away, but that information isn’t “too far away.”
“It’s not going to be tomorrow, but it’s not too far away. As I said, we’re getting into a much more regular cadence of shipping games,” said Hartmann. “That’s all I’m allowed to tell you right now… It’s all about quality. You don’t want to just be rushed out. That’s doesn’t work. It has to be Triple-A quality, because the bar is so high.”
In 2022, it was announced that Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics had signed a deal that would see Amazon publish the next major Tomb Raider game. In 2023, Amazon announced that it signed a deal with Embracer to develop an as-of-yet mysterious MMO based on The Lord of the Rings.
Hartmann also briefly touched on potential crossover content between TV and games, and said that while the idea can lead to great things, he also likened it to something like Spider-Man projects, where not everything has to mingle together but can still be enjoyable.
“You see it with “Tomb Raider,” where we’re gonna have a “Tomb Raider” game coming and they’re doing a show. And some people say, “Oh, will they be linked together?” And I give them the example, look at “Spider-Man.” There’s amazing, amazing games,” Hartmann said. “There’s great animated content, there’s great live-action, and everyone seems to be very happy with that. So it does not need to be always that everything is mingled together, but it’s really one brand, which really just shows for me why transmedia nowadays is so important, and how games is such a vital part.”
