A new figure from NECA absolutely nails the dark hero of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. While the Last Ronin’s story may be about to end (for now), the depiction of a gritty, Dark Knight Returns-esque future in which three of the four classic Turtles are dead has cemented the titular hero's spot as one of the coolest TMNT characters ever. Now, the Ronin will make a worthy appearance in the medium that cemented the Turtles as a cultural icon: action figures!
Since the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ explosion into pop culture in the late '80s, the brand is famous for its animated TV shows, live-action films, and toys, which often overshadow the franchise’s comic book origins. TMNT action figures and other merch were in high demand in the '80s and '90s, establishing the more kid-friendly cartoon as the franchise's default. However, the Turtles were far darker on their initial creation, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin dusts off an idea originally dreamed up by creators Eastman and Laird back when the Turtles were a gritty parody of Frank Miller's Daredevil.

The Last Ronin is set in a dark future where the Turtles have all but been defeated by their foes, the Foot Clan, leaving only one surviving Turtle to avenge his brothers. This dark hero is captured in a new figure from NECA, sporting a range of weapons claimed from his fallen allies, including Rafael's sai, Leonardo's katana, Donatello's bo staff, and Michelangelo's nunchaku, as well as a grappling hook, tonga, smoke bombs, goggles, and shuriken.
