What’s your most embarrassing internet habit? We won’t tell. Well, that’s not entirely true, because we’re about to spill about what Americans are most ashamed of doing online.
Online Tech Tips asked 1,000 people about their most shameful secret behaviors(Opens in a new window). And the top one is snooping. Nearly half (45%) looked up people they know to find pictures of them (56%) and learn about what their lifestyles are like (54%), their relationship status (42%), their jobs (36%), where they live (32%), and whether they have kids (26%).
Right up there with being nosy is looking at “embarrassing” content (45%), which was followed by searching for personal advice (38%), researching medical symptoms (36%), shopping for products they wouldn’t buy in person (25%), reading gossip and celebrity news (21%), and reading a lot of negative news (12%). Correspondingly, the top sites that people like to visit but don’t like to admit to are Pornhub, Reddit, WebMD, TMZ, and BuzzFeed.
Divulging all of this would be too much for 54% of Americans, who would rather give up using their phones for a year than have their lifetime internet browsing history published online. Two out of three clear their browsing histories to hide what they’ve been up to from their partners (30%), kids (23%), parents (22%), friends (10%), bosses (9%), and coworkers (8%).
