A movie based on Sony's Gran Turismo racing series is set to release in 2023.
That's according to Deadline, which reports that the flick is being directed by Neill Blomkamp, best known for helming District 9 and Elysium, and is slated for an August 11th, 2023 launch.
Sony's Columbia Pictures is producing, while American Sniper and Thank You for Your Service screenwriter Jason Hall is penning a script.
“Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish fulfilment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver,” reads the plot description.
Based on the above, it's possible that the film could depict the GT Academy. This was a TV contest run by both Sony and Nissan from 2008 until 2016 which saw Gran Turismo players given the chance to become real-life professional racing drivers.
Sony also has film and TV projects based on God of War and Horizon on the way.
Gran Turismo made its debut for the original PlayStation back in 1997 and has been exclusive to the platform since. More recently, Sony has moved to release some of its first-party hits on PC, something that the company has big plans for in the future.
