It wasn't too long ago that Sony revealed it has Gran Turismo and Horizon Zero Dawn TV shows in the works, as it looks to adapt even more of its beloved franchises. Later reports revealed that Sony's Gran Turismo project is actually a movie helmed by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, and now both a release date and plot synopsis have been revealed.
First revealed via an update in Deadline's original article, the Gran Turismo movie will reportedly release in theatres on August 11, 2023 and is based on a true story. For those of you wondering how a franchise centered around cars will make for a compelling movie, the plot actually revolves around a young Gran Turismo player who uses his gaming skills to win a series of competitions and becomes a real-life professional race car driver as a result.

It's also confirmed that Neill Blomkamp will be directing the movie, as suggested by earlier reports, and that Columbia Pictures is the company behind the project. Jason Hall has apparently written the screenplay, while Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Doug Belgrad, Dana Brunetti from PlayStation Productions have all been brought aboard to produce.
While most of Deadline's earlier report was accurate regarding the movie's director and actual existence, it was originally reported to be "very early in production." Now that we know the film is releasing in August next year the project must actually be a lot further into production than previously thought.
