CD Projekt will release its official mod editor for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt this month.
Titled The Witcher 3 REDkit, it’s billed as a comprehensive modding tool that lets users customise and expand the game as they see fit, “from overhauling terrain to creating new quests, animations, characters, and more”.
Starting on May 21, 2024, it will be available free for everyone who owns a copy of the game on PC.
Those interested in trying it out before then can sign up for playtesting, which was made available through Steam in April.
“The Witcher 3 REDkit offers you the same powerful tools as the CD Projekt RED developers, giving you the freedom to take your ideas to the next level and transform The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt into a playground for your imagination,” according to the company.
“From crafting new quests, items, weapons, and characters to developing animations, entire storylines, and new territories, this tool empowers you to shape your adventure precisely how you envision it.”
CD Projekt claimed last May that The Witcher 3 had sold over 50 million copies since its release in 2015, making it one of the 10 best-selling games of all time, “according to public data”.
The company will be hoping that the mod editor gives the game a new lease of life as fans wait for the next mainline Witcher title, which is the first in a new trilogy.
Codenamed Polaris, the open-world title is being built with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, rather than CD Projekt’s proprietary Red Engine, which powered previous Witcher games and Cyberpunk 2077.
Over 400 employees, or around two thirds of CD Projekt’s developers, were working on the game as of March 2024.
