Omni-Man dropped earlier this month, becoming Mortal Kombat 1's first guest character. Despite being a fairly popular addition to the game, his inclusion wasn't always set in stone, as director Ed Boon recently revealed that he first approached Invincible and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman for permission to include Michonne as part of Kombat Pack 1.
Unfortunately, Boon doesn't go into why he went with Omni-Man instead of Michonne. Presumably, it may have had something to do with the recent release of Season 2 of Invincible, though that is just conjecture. What we do know is that the inclusion of Michonne would have been pretty well received, if the comments on Boon's info drop are anything to go by.
The replies are pretty much unanimous on how cool it would have been to see Michonne in Mortal Kombat 1, with some pushing back on Boon's decision to go with Omni-Man alongside Homelander, since the two are so similar in their abilities. Others think that this was a huge wasted opportunity to get a female character in the first Kombat Pack, which has been criticized for being male-dominated.
While I'm not the biggest Walking Dead fan, that would have been super sick. We could have finally had a female guest character and it would have been a woman of color on top of that.
In fact, even though the Mortal Kombat series has been adding characters from other media to its games for well over a decade, we still haven't had a female guest character at all (no, the Xenomorph from Alien doesn't count). That's quite surprising considering how there are a bunch of female characters like Michonne, Beatrix Kiddo, Sarah Connor, and DC characters like Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy that feel like a natural fit for the series.
