The Sandman season 1 star Vivienne Acheampong teases the conflict between Dream and Lucienne. The upcoming TV show is based on Neil Gaiman's comic book series of the same name, which he wrote for DC and its Vertigo imprint. The Sandman comics were published between 1989 and 1996, and spanned 75 issues, proving to be an outstanding cult success. Plans to adapt Gaiman's work into live-action began in 1991, although initially, a feature film was being developed. The project languished in development hell for several years, iterating through different ideas. But ultimately, Netflix signed off on The Sadman TV series, with Gaiman, The Dark Knight's David S. Goyer, and Wonder Woman's Allen Heinberg attached as the executive producers.
With The Sandman dropping in less than a week, anticipation for the show is at an all-time high. The hype for the series particularly increased after the San Diego Comic-Con 2022, where several teasers for The Sandman were revealed, previewing the story. As the clips show, the series follows Tom Sturridge's Morpheus/Dream as he finally escapes his 100-year-long imprisonment and returns to his kingdom of Dreaming, which has fallen into disarray since his departure. During Dream's absence, Vivienne Acheampong's Lucienne, the gender-flipped version of the librarian from the comics, acts as the effective keeper for the Dreaming. But after his return, the status quo gets a little complicated due to the tensions between the original and the interim ruler.
