The Penguin Production Delayed Due to Writers Strike
According to Deadline, the ongoing production of DC Studios’ upcoming Max series was shut down in New York City after being interrupted by WGA East picketers.
It’s unclear if this setback would have a bigger impact on The Batman spin-off’s filming schedule. The Penguin isn’t the only upcoming superhero series that has been suspended due to WGA-organized picketers. Last week, filming on two Marvel Studio projects, including and had also been temporarily shut down.
Set in the world of the 2022’s The Batman, The Penguin will focus on Oswald Cobblepot’s past and show his rise to power in Gotham’s seedy underbelly rather than portray him as the established kingpin. The character has a rich history of live-action appearances, as Danny DeVito famously played Penguin in Batman Returns while Robin Lord Taylor portrayed him in Gotham.
The limited drama will be based on the DC characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. It is being written by Lauren LeFranc, who is also set as the showrunner. The first two episodes will be directed by Craig Zobel. Joining Farrell are Rhenzy Feliz, Cristin Milioti, Michael Zegen, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Francois Chau, Carmen Ejogo, and David H. Holmes. It is also rumored that Robert Pattinson might make an appearance as Bruce Wayne/ Batman.
It is executive produced by The Batman’s Dylan Clark and Matt Reeves, Farrell, LeFranc, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassanand, and Rafi Crohn. It is a joint project between 6th and Idaho, DC Entertainment, Dylan Clark Productions, and Warner Bros. Television.
