Mando's (Pedro Pascal) Rodian friend in The Book of Boba Fett episode 5 is more important than he first seemed. The Book of Boba Fett sets up The Mandalorian season 3 as Din Djarin returns to the Star Wars universe and continues his story from The Mandalorian season 2. After he gets his beskar spear converted into armor for Grogu and learns he has to atone for taking off his Mandalorian helmet, Din Djarin boards a commercial flight to Tatooine, where he makes a young Rodian friend.
In "Return of the Mandalorian," the Armorer (Emily Swallow) bans Mando for going against the Way of the Mandalore (by removing his helmet). She tells Mando "one can only be redeemed in the living waters beneath the mines of Mandalore." But the mines have been destroyed, and Din is left with no other choice but to leave Kolzoc alley and figure out a plan on the way. Mando thus boards a commercial flight (checking his Mandalorian weapons as luggage as the policy dictates) to Tatooine, where he can get a new ship from Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris). Inside the aircraft, a young Rodian takes a liking to Mando and even waves at him, much like Grogu did in The Mandalorian. Din then sighs and looks at the tiny Grogu-shaped package the Armorer made him for his friend.

Throughout The Book of Boba Fett episode 5, it's clear how much Mando misses Grogu: he has the Armorer make Grogu something (most likely armor) from the beskar spear, and in the last minutes of the episode, he tells Fennec (Ming-Na Wen) he wants to "pay a visit to a little friend" before joining Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison).
