Following years of silence and several development shakeups, CI Games' Lords of the Fallen series is finally returning. However, the new game isn't Lords of the Fallen 2, instead going by a name that seems to signify a reboot of sorts: The Lords of the Fallen.
The announcement trailer, which premiered as part of Gamescom Opening Night Live, has a narrator offer creatures to join the titular Lords of the Fallen and «damn humanity to a new age of devastation.» But heroes will still emerge, and this will, of course, be who we play as in the game.
The original Lords of the Fallen took heavy inspiration from Dark Souls, and it sounds like this will also be the case with The Lords of the Fallen. The successor, which takes place «more than a thousand years» after the original, features an interconnected world that is about five times larger, as well as online co-op support. The combat system is described in the announcement release as «fast, fluid, and challenging,» which magic available to both deal damage and buff your abilities. This would differ somewhat from the first game, which was a little bit lumbering and slow.
The Lords of the Fallen is in development at Hexworks Studio, an in-house developer of CI Games, following developer Defiant Studios' removal from the project. The original Lords of the Fallen released all the way back in 2014 and was developed by Deck13, which chose to leave the franchise afterward and instead developed The Surge and The Surge 2.
The Lords of the Fallen doesn't yet have a release date, but it will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
