This year's Emmy nominations have dropped and it's quite a good showing for HBO's The Last of Us, which has picked up a total of 8 nominations for a variety of categories including Best Actor, Best Cable Drama Series, and Best Costumes. However, there's one particular nomination that is rubbing some people the wrong way, and that's Bella Ramsey's nomination for Best Actress for playing the role of Ellie.
Those that have kept up with Bella Ramsey's career outside of The Last of Us will know that they came out as non-binary back in January, revealing that they now go by they/them pronouns and are uncomfortable when being gendered. Because of this, many have taken issue with The Last of Us and the Emmys nominating them as "Best Actress", an award that implies the winner is female.

Twitter user sillygoofyz was one of the first to point out the issue, with their tweet racking up a rather large amount of support from others also irritated by the nomination. They take issue with the fact that an openly non-binary person has been nominated for the award, calling for awards show like the Emmys to do away with "segregating acting awards by gender entirely".
It's something that Bella Ramsey themselves has called for too, explaining in an interview with NME back in May that their experience submitting themselves for this year's Emmys was very "uncomfortable". During the interview, they also call for "more space" for non-binary actors at awards shows like the Emmys, and doesn't want gendered categories to "be a reason that non-binary actors like me can’t be celebrated". However, they do admit that "finding alternatives is really complex."
