The DCEU film franchise is all but confirmed to be rebooted in 2022’s The Flash, but this should worry filmmakers, as it’s allowing the franchise to avoid a potential continuity-related issue of the MCU. The MCU is easily one of the most successful modern film franchises, making excellent use of comic book-style continuity and staying faithful to the source material as it releases multiple superhero films each year that build to crossover movies like The Avengers. The DCEU, despite similarly respecting its iconic comic book characters, has been far less successful than its competition, but its timeline reboot will help it avoid a problem that the MCU’s consistent continuity might run into someday.
One year after the critically-acclaimed Dark Knight Trilogy concluded, the DC Extended Universe began with Man of Steel, a love letter to the Superman mythos that, unfortunately, divided critics and fans. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was divisive as well, but the film delved into the larger DC universe, introducing Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and briefly previewing the three other founding Justice League members. The theatrical version of Justice League, however, failed to please the majority of critics and fans, providing the franchise with an underwhelming entry that should have been a massive success. While 2021’s director’s cut of the film had a far more positive reception, Justice League’s performance and the divisiveness of its predecessors may have motivated the significant timeline changes from the forthcoming The Flash movie.
