The games have followed the tales of two outlaws whose fates were tied to each other. Arthur Morgan tried and failed to save the Van der Linde Gang from disaster, and John Marston was forced to hunt down the gang's remnants years after the fact. Everything that has happened thus far has led back to the Van der Linde Gang members in some way, either through their actions or their legacy. It's likely that 's protagonist will have some connection as well, even though 's Van der Lindes are already finished.

After the events of the first two games, the only characters left with a connection to the Van der Linde Gang and the ability to continue a similar lifestyle are Jack, Sadie, and Charles. If the games intend to keep following this same group of characters, the opportunity to do so is dissipating. The best thing to do with this ongoing storyline may be to give it an ending.
So far, the Van der Linde Gang has been a crucial part of each game in the series. While that made sense for the plots of the first two, unless is another prequel, the gang does not exist at all. The survivors are scattered with little to no contact with each other. For all intents and purposes, the Van der Linde Gang is finished, and they likely aren't coming back.
