There have been many different teams of Avengers in Marvel's history, but the West Coast Avengers are without a doubt the one with the most tragic history. During their long tenure, this spin-off of the original Avengers experienced a sequence of adversities and tragedies that affected each of its members.
The Avengers of the West Coast were created in the aftermath of the first Secret Wars by Vision, who at the time was the Avengers' chairman. The synthezoid believed that one team of Avengers was not enough to face threats to Earth's safety, so he tasked Hawkeye with selecting a team and setting up headquarters near Los Angeles. The original lineup included Hawkeye's wife Bobbi Morse, aka Mockingbird, Wonder Man, Tigra, and Iron Man. The team, however, seemed doomed since its inception. Vision, in fact, was becoming deranged as he decided to take over the computer systems of the planet to ensure peace. His decision to set up the West Coast team was part of this plan so, even after Vision's scheme was discovered and foiled, the existence of these new Avengers was questioned by the U.S. Government, who sent USAgent to join the team as their imposed leader, causing tensions and strife to erupt.

Vision was kidnapped by the government, afraid he would attempt another takeover, and completely dismantled. Hank Pym, resident scientist of the West Coast team, put the synthezoid back together, but Wonder Man refused to allow his brain patterns to be used again to provide a matrix for the Vision's emotions because he was secretly in love with Scarlet Witch.
